What Is Trauma?

Trauma is a very scary or upsetting event or a group of events that changes how a person reacts to stress.

When something scary happens, a person’s body responds. Changes in their bodies get them ready to react to danger. If the scary thing continues to happen or causes a lot of stress, a person’s body might stay ready to respond to threats, even after they are safe. This is sometimes called trauma.

This kind of stress can make it hard for children to focus and learn. It can also make it harder for them to be healthy as they grow.
